Evelyn Hemphill
In loving memory of my mother, Maggie Jane Cunningham (January 11, 1954 – October 20, 2021), my maternal grandmother, Ola Mae Cunningham, my aunt, Rosetta McNeil, and in honor of my aunt Gloria McKee, aunt Jacqueline Cotten, as well as my resilient 93-year-old paternal grandmother, Mabel B. Knox, this book is dedicated. My grandmother Mabel continues to inspire me with her independence, still driving and walking on her own. I am deeply grateful for the many named and unnamed individuals who have profoundly influenced my life.
As Evelyn Denise Cunningham, I was born in May 1971 and currently reside in Rock Hill, South Carolina. While briefly living in Chester, South Carolina, south of Rock Hill, my most recent journey began. Being the eldest among four siblings, I have three biological children and grandchildren whom I adore, whether biologically related to me or not.
This significant journey commenced when my turbulent marriage ended and custody of my youngest child was granted to my former husband, who was also my abuser, by the South Carolina Family Court System. Losing custody of my youngest son became the catalyst that compelled me to fulfill God’s calling. Today, I advocate against domestic violence, sharing my personal experiences within the South Carolina Family Court System.
